Diabetes mellitus is associated with a wide range of complications, such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, micro and macro-vascular diseases, altered wound healing and periodontitis. 1 Moreover, diabetes and periodontitis seem to interact in a bidirectional manner. 2 At present, there is strong evidence to suggest that the incidence and severity of periodontitis is influenced in part by diabetes mellitus and the level of blood glucose control. 3
